Thanksgiving Means Turkey, Stuffing and Staying Alert

Thanksgiving Means Turkey, Stuffing and Staying Alert

When I called  my mom this year to suggest we all have Thanksgiving together and make the meal at her modest apartment in a Retirement Center, there was a strained silence.  Then she said, “Why don’t we just buy a turkey already made with all the trimmings?”. I started to rebut and then she reminded me how we left the gravy on the stove to burn which set off all the alarms in her huge building last year!  She was still embarrassed.
Apparently we aren’t alone. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average. Unattended cooking is the primary culprit, leading to a significant number of fires and injuries.   To ensure a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving, keep these fire safety tips in mind: (Actually most are good for all year round!)

  • Stay in the Kitchen: It is so easy to get distracted with all the company.  But this diligence will avoid so many mishaps
  • Watch the Turkey:  Check on it frequently, so you know it is cooking evenly and doesn’t catch fire.
  • Keep Kids Away: Children should be kept at a safe distance from the stove. Cooking surface and steam can cause severe burns.
  • Beware of Hot Liquids: Be cautious of hot food and liquids, as spills can lead to burns. Keep children away from these hazards.
  • Secure Knives: Store knives out of reach of children to prevent accidental cuts.
  • Manage Cords: Ensure that cords from appliances like electric knives or coffee makers are not dangling where children can reach them.
  • Store Matches and Lighters: Keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach in a locked cabinet.
  • Candle Safety: Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
  • Clear Pathways: Keep the floor clear of clutter to prevent tripping accidents.
  • Test Smoke Alarms: Ensure your smoke alarms are working by testing them regularly.
  • Fire Extinguisher: Have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and ensure it is still primed.

This will ensure a more fun and safe holiday season for all! Happy Thanksgiving!!
