There are many methods to keep your home safe from intruders. Although you may choose to invest in an expensive home security system, there are other ways to ensure your home is secure.
Outside Your Home
Installing motion sensor lighting around your home is a great way to deter trespassers and alert you that there may be someone outside. They also provide lighting and safety for you when you are coming home late at night.
Additionally, consider that it is still possible to break into garages that have automatic door openers. It is advisable to lock these from the inside if you are storing anything valuable especially when you are out of town. If you park your car outside your home, remember to keep it locked and don’t store any expensive items inside of it as cars are often targets to break ins.
Inside Your Home
Utilizing a safe or a lock box is a great way to keep your valuable documents secure. Many home safes and lock boxes are water and fire resistant so if disaster strikes your home you don’t need to worry about what may happen to important documents.
You may also want to consider adding privacy films to any windows you don’t want people looking in through. They are relatively easy to install and an inexpensive way to deter intruders.
While You’re Gone
Avoid posting on social media that you are going to be out of town, especially if your posts are public for anyone to see. I also recommend installing a timer for your lights so they will switch on in the evening, making it appear that you are home. Finally, alert a neighbor that you will be gone so they can keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.
